Raavan
April 28, 2010

Raavan is not a story, it is a world.
Beera Munda – Undisputed, Unlawful, Untamed
Dev Pratap Sharma – The Punisher; the Law, the Righteous
Ragini – Conscience, Beauty; Music
Dev falls in with Ragini, a spunky classical dancer who is as unconventional as him. They get married and he takes up his new post in Lal Maati, a small town in northern India.
A town where the world of law is not the police but Beera, a tribal who has, over the years, shifted the power equation of the place from the ruling to the have-nots of the area.
Dev knows that the key to bringing order to any place is not to vanquish the big fish; in this case – Beera.
In one stroke Dev manage to rip open Beera’s world, and set in motion a change of event which will claim lives, changes fortune.
Beera, injured but enraged hits back starting a battle that draws Dev, Beera and Ragini into the jungle.

The jungle which is dense, confusing, scary.
And in this journey they must confront their own truth. A journey which will test their beliefs, convictions and emotions.
Emotions which are as scary and confusing as the forest.
The forest becomes the battleground. The battle between good and evil, between Dev and Beera, between Ram and Raavan.
But when the lines dividing good and evil are blurring fast whose side will you take.
When hate turns to love and the good starts looking evil.
Which side will you battle for?
Love is the battle that nobody wins but everyone must fight.
Even this Raavan.
"Only superstars have huge B.O. pull & I’m nowhere near that standard" – Akshay
April 28, 2010

Akshay Kumar has stopped being diplomatic. After the onslaught that he faced with the release of Chandni Chowk To China, he decided to call ‘enough is enough’ and took a front foot during the promotion of Blue. He was quite vociferous about the current trend in Bollywood where negative reviews start floating through SMSes on Thursday night itself. He kept his head high up during De Dana Dan as well and is maintaining the same mood for Housefull as well, which many tout as being all set to fetch the biggest ever opening of Akshay’s career.
This appears to be a good follow up to the 2006-2008 phase for Akshay when number of his films worked primarily due to his star presence and knack of going over and above the script. No wonder, it led to soaring expectations amongst the audience due to which they became greedier for content as well rather than just look at Akshay Kumar on screen.
“I see what you are saying, and again I agree that expectations are a very tricky business. But I am only one man”, says Akshay, “I will always give my best, but I know I am not always right. I can’t rely on my screen effort alone to make a movie successful. There must be content, memorable dialogues, fantastic songs, love, romance, passion, tears, and laughter. But I am just one actor; I am not a professional in all areas when it comes to films. I make so many films that it becomes impossible to put so much attention to detail in everyone that I make. My actual answer is that I know I must give my audience more and yes, I am working on it.”
Well, one has to agree when Akshay acknowledges working on too many movies. Last year itself saw the release of as many as five films that were evenly spread out right through those 12 months. Also, except for 8X10 Tasveer and to an extent Chandni Chowk To China, each of his other three releases did take a very good opening. Whether it was Kambakkht Ishq, Blue or De Dana Dan, no one could have really complained as far as the opening weekend was concerned. Still, not many from the trade or industry are willing to acknowledge this box office pull. Why has that been the case, one asks Akshay?
“Because not many people, whether it’s the heroes even heroines really want to see others succeed”, comes a blunt answer from Akshay, “I am not saying there is anything wrong with that; after all it’s just human competitive instincts. I know I had very good openings last year, and so do these actors as well. But then they can’t be expected to happily acknowledge that even some of my not so great movies have also fetched such bumper openings.”

He shrugs away the mentality of his peers and counterparts. “It’s ok if that’s the way they wish to be”, sighs Akshay, “Actually I reckon the day when our industry comes together and works in unison. Now that will be the day when our industry will become the strongest. No bitching, no bad mouthing, no sabotaging – just pure enthusiasm for each other’s work. Of course, it all sounds almost too good to be true, isn’t it?”
Talking about his films taking an opening, it is a known fact that for any actor, it’s his/her right to claim superstar status as long as a film opens well. After that, it’s the product that has to do the talking, right?
“Errr, well I would say ‘kind of’ actually”, says Akshay after a quick thinking, “Yes, it is my duty to pull in the crowds but then it is also my duty to keep them coming film after film. Even if a movie isn’t the best as it should be, as a superstar one must be great enough to still convince people that the film is worth seeing even if it is just to see your performance and not the film.”
He is quick to admit that he is yet to attain such superstar status.
“That’s right, only superstars have that power that results in the kind of box office pull that I was mentioning. I admit that I am nowhere near that standard (yet). Once that happens, then and only then do you really get to be called a Legend. Yup, not lucky, but a real Legend”, smiles Akshay before signing off.
"I freaked out on my ’suhaagraat’ song with Akshay" – Jiah Khan
April 28, 2010

Young Jiah Khan has encountered quite a few road blocks ever since she turned towards the world of films. If her entry into Bollywood was a faux pas of sorts with a missed opportunity in Emraan Hashmi starrer Tumsa Nahi Dekha a few years back, last year was even more disheartening for her as she was replaced by Genelia D’Souza when Shahid Kapoor starrer Chance Pe Dance was almost complete. It didn’t take much time for her to wipe off her tears and move on to Housefull. Still, the scars still remain, understandably so, even as she looks forward to far better years ahead with bigger projects and stronger roles in the pipeline. Joginder Tuteja catches up with the young actor who is ready to shock audience with her contrasting portrayal of a simple girl and a seductive siren alternatively Housefull.
After Nishabd and Ghajini, audience get to see the sensual side of Jiah in the ’suhaagraat’ song (I Don’t Know What To Do) in Housefull. That should keep them happy, right? You know, I was so excited the moment I heard the song. It was so hilarious and you have to closely listen to the lyrics to really know what’s happening in the background. I just freaked out in it and there was so much more fun in store when we started shooting for the song.

It could have become a totally sexy song but we have avoided it to become one
![]()
Yes, one can see an uncomfortable looking Akshay Kumar trying to make an escape from the bedroom.
True and the best part about Akshay is that he improvises a lot even as the camera is rolling. In fact as we moved ahead in the song’s shoot, he only made it look funnier and funnier. It could have become a totally sexy song but we have avoided it to become one.
Well, seems the fun part included whipping Akshay as a part of the entire sexy rendezvous, right?
Oh, I felt so bad about it but then Farah (Khan), who was choreographing the song, wanted me to do that. It was actually a real whip and the idea was to make it all look hilarious on screen as I got the kinky side of affairs on. Akshay was quite a sport though and never complained.

There’s no bad blood between Ken and me
![]()
It’s after ages that one has seen a ’suhaagraat’ track and that too with the bride wearing a saree.
This is for the first time that I was wearing a saree and I really enjoyed it. This is what I always meant to do for the big screen. And I guess regarding the ’suhaagraat’ sequence being revisited then I guess it’s all good because somewhere we are getting a little too serious about movies. We should retain such old world charm from the 80s. It is wonderful to see such entertaining films finally coming out now.
Well, talking about past, last year you shed quite some tears after the entire Chance Pe Dance episode.
(Says firmly) I have completely forgotten what happened last year. See, I have studied films and I understand that sometimes things don’t quite work out. Eventually, it is a director’s show and it’s his film. He knows what is working and what is not and eventually, it is entirely his prerogative. Of course I was quite sad about the entire turn of events, who wouldn’t be? But then I do respect all my directors, co-stars and producers; if they decide to so something then I have to abide by that. I am hired to play a role and do my best.

Housefull is releasing soon after IPL and no wonder, it is the most awaited film today
![]()
Aah, now see seems like you are taking a diplomatic stand. Really Jiah, have you indeed forgiven and forgotten?
See, it is not about forgiving or forgetting. It was a decision that was taken and one has to move on. Tomorrow, if they ask me to do another movie and it suits me as well, I would do that. Ken (Ghosh), the director of Chance Pe Dance, is a good guy. Though it was reported that there was bad blood between Ken and me, the fact is that there was none. That should set the record straight.

In a way though you must have felt like poetic justice coming your way when the film failed at the box office early this year.
Well, ‘poetic justice’ would be too harsh a word after all. When I chose the film, it was because I wanted to do it. This is why today even if a film doesn’t work; I don’t look back it with any negativity. I was quite satisfied with what had come my way and even if today someone would have come to me with that script and setup and asked me to work on it, I would have done that. There are lot of good films that do not do well at the box office. At the end of the day you can never be too sure about audience.
You must be quite sure about Housefull though, isn’t it? After all it is your biggest film till date with a promise of good visibility to boost.
Absolutely (smiles). There are a lot of people who are excited about the film and reports have been great so far. I have been getting feelers on Facebook and Twitter from even those whom I don’t know. The promotion has been amazing and I look back at the entire experience of doing the film and feel great that I did it. But then as I said, I don’t want to be over confident about anything. I would rather wait and watch. Housefull is releasing soon after IPL and no wonder, it is the most awaited film today.

"Aamir set record with 3 Idiots and someone has to break it" – Sajid Khan
April 28, 2010

By now, the famed confidence of Sajid Khan is known across the industry. In fact as the release date of Housefull comes closer; there is an increased sense of confidence in his tone. No nervous pangs here, no butterflies in the stomach, no ‘oh I am so excited that I haven’t slept for 4 days’ quotes are coming from him. Instead, he is breathing and eating Housefull even as expectations have soared by many multitudes. As the film is close to 100 hours away from its release, Sajid Khan converses with Joginder Tuteja on record breaking business that Housefull is expected to create, the coming together of a huge cast and his lack of fear when comes to critics amongst other topics.
Housefull will be the first real biggie that would arrive after 3 Idiots. There was My Name Is Khan and Veer which were solo starrers but this one is a quintessential masala multistarrer. You must be aware about huge expectations that people would have from the film. Doesn’t it become scary as well? After all eyes would be on the film to succeed. Quite honestly I would be disappointed if Housefull does not do record breaking business. Heyy Babyy released in 2007 and Housefull is arriving in 2010. In 3 years, business has grown tremendously. I am extremely confident about the film because I know that the biggest hero I have here is the screenplay. This is a kind of movie that people would enjoy watching 2-3 times. For any blockbuster, it is a bare minimum requirement to have repeat value. This is what I kept in mind when I wrote Housefull with three other writers. 3 Idiots wouldn’t have been such a huge blockbuster if
people wouldn’t have seen it 2-3 times.

Talking about 3 Idiots, there would be obvious comparisons with the film, mainly from box office standpoint, when Housefull opens this Friday. 3 Idiots had broken all records and enjoyed an astonishing journey. Do you think that in 2010,
whether Housefull or any other film for that matter would be able to break
the record created by 3 Idiots? Let me tell you something. I have a lot of friends from the film industry and we indulge into a lot of bets around the box office prospects of a film. Of course these are token bets as we exchange, Blue Ray discs etc. But then, it’s fun. Sajid (Nadiadwala), Riteish and I are trade pundits and when it came to 3 Idiots, we all knew that it would be huge. However, none of us could have ever fathomed that it would be this huge. I guess somewhere even the makers didn’t know expect such outcome. When a film connects at such a level, even you get surprised.

So you were really surprised with the way 3 Idiots performed? Pleasantly surprised actually and it’s a good thing that this happened because it has shown people the way. I am sure 99% people were very happy with it because once money starts coming into films, the rolling begins. It gives a breathing space to other big films in line. It tells people that this kind of business is possible. Ok, so my film is not 3 Idiots but
then it has lots of comedy, has its heart at the right place, is seeing a correct release and boasts of tremendous publicity. I am sure the film will see a great box office response. After all records are meant to be broken. Aamir set the record with 3 Idiots and someone has to break it. So why shouldn’t I aim high?

Well, you have actually aimed quite high in case of Housefull. Your film after all boasts of a stunning presence of hot bods like Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta and Jiah Khan. Still Sajid, one wonders if it became a little too much to handle for you
as well. I believe in laying down cards at the very beginning itself. I tell my actors that you either take it or leave it. I don’t play favourites with anybody. If I do so, I will end up cheating myself and the film. In case of Housefull, everybody’s role has been cleverly balanced. Also, I believe in joint narration. So we had Akshay, Ritiesh, Arjun, Deepika, Lara, Jiah, Boman, Randhir, Lilette and Chunky – everyone sitting together and doing a joint reading.
You actually had a dozen odd actors coming together for a narration? (Smiles) Even Sajid (Nadiadwala) had a similar expression on his face when I shared this idea of mine. He couldn’t believe it actually when I pulled it off. Something like this can perhaps happen for a small budget film but when it comes to big budget commercial films, this doesn’t quite happen. However, we had a professional setup where we rehearsed for hours in my room. Also, I insist that to get things right onscreen, there should be cordial relationship off screen as well. This is why no one sat in the van by
themselves. We used to sit and eat food together. There was a lot of masti, mazaa, film quizzes, gossips etc. that we indulged in.

So in Housefull, are we seeing a gift from Sajid to Akshay? After all he acted in your Heyy Babyy which was your first film as a director. On the other hand Housefull comes at a time when Akshay is looking forward to a huge blockbuster to his name. I am sure that there is no gifting business happening in case of Housefull. I have a very strong intuition that this would be Akshay’s biggest hit till date. Perhaps then I would state that this was Akshay’s gift to me.
You seem to be putting on a diplomatic stance…
Really, neither am I am being diplomatic nor am I trying to sound overtly modest. In fact as you can see in the promos of Housefull, the film’s tagline reads Heyy Babyy team reloads’. It doesn’t read like ‘….from the director of Heyy Babyy’. Also, one thing that I am sure is that you would never see my film’s title followed by ‘A Sajid Khan film’. It would always be plain and simple ‘Directed by Sajid Khan’. See, I don’t live in an illusionary world. At the end of the day, no actor or a director is above a film. They all
work hard to make a film. I am just a medium. After that, a film breaths its own life.
Malaika features in latest PETA ad
April 28, 2010

‘Wild Birds Don’t Belong in the Circus’, says the Bollywood bombshell Malaika Arora Khan, better known for her meteoric rise from MTV VJ to supermodel to Bollywood star, the sultry beauty might be flying higher now than ever before. That’s because Malaika whose warm heart matches her mesmerising good looks features in a brand-new ad for her friends at PETA India, which was shot by ace photographer Atul Kasbekar.
Khan poses in a formfitting white macaw ensemble created by top designer Wendell Rodricks. The tagline reads, “Wild Birds Don’t Belong in the Circus. Boycott Animal Circuses”
“Robbing birds of flight, forcing them to live in tiny, filthy cages and tormenting them into performing silly tricks are acts of cruelty to animals”, says Khan.
Malaika is calling out to all her fans to support the cause. “I ask all my fans to boycott circuses which use animals,” says the sultry actress.
Prateik gearing up for Bollywood
April 28, 2010

Prateik has gotten over his chicken pox attack. The young actor is back on his feet. And how! Back from the shooting of Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maro Dum, he’s busy being rigorously trained in Western dance forms under Sandip Soparkar.
Prateik goes on stage for a charity show in aid of destitute kids this week where he’ll dance like there’s no tomorrow.
Confirming these developments, Prateik’s aunt Manya Patil says, “Prateik has been practising hard in all the Western dance forms… the Salsa, tango, waltz, you name it. Filmy dancing was one area he was weak in. Now he’s making up in that area.”
Continues the proud aunt, “When Prateik did Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na, he wasn’t sure if he was going to be an actor. The aim now is to be a full-on Hindi film hero. But at the same time Prateik is very much grounded to a reality beyond cinema.”
Says his proud and protective aunt, “I take him with me to travel all over the country and outside. I want his world -vision to be broadened and to accommodate all kinds of reality not necessarily born from cinema. At home we don’t discuss cinema incessantly. Prateik has to understand that there is a vast world outside cinema.”
Not that Prateik hasn’t been catching up on movie experiences. He has been avidly watching all the Hindi classics including his mother Smita Patil’s, but sometimes seems to enjoy the performances of other actors more than his mother’s.
Says his aunt, “Prateik saw Chakra and said he liked his Naseer Uncle better than his mom. I looked at him sternly. But he has his own mind. And uses it liberally. He knows exactly what to do.”
Prateik is making more money than most actors of his age, thanks to the upswing in his career. But he still gets the same pocket money at home that he did before he became an actor. Not a penny more not a penny less!
Says his aunt, “Though Prateik’s life as a professional has changed and he’s making quite a lot of money, at home we haven’t allowed him to acquire any outward signs of his new status. So yes Prateik still gets the same pocket money that he used to before he became a star.”
Prateik remains close to his mother’s family. He apparently, shares a far stronger bond with his aunt Manya’s son Kail who’s studying in New York than his half-brother Arya Babbar.
Says Manya, “To me there’s no difference between Prateik and my biological son Kail.” Kail who’s studying in New York is approximately a year younger than Prateik. The two cousins share everything from confidences to clothes.
“I’ve never felt any difference in my feelings for Kail and Prateik,” says Manya Patil emotionally.
Spanish version of Kites to release after Hindi and English versions
April 28, 2010

The world and its favourite senorita would now get to hear Hrithik Roshan speak in Spanish. Besides the 2-hour-10-minute Hindi version and the 1-hour-30-minute English versions of Kites which are releasing worldwide in May, there will now be a Spanish version of the film to come a little later after the two other versions.
Confirming this development Sanjeev Lamba CEO of Reliance Big Pictures says, “Yes we are indeed on the verge of closing a deal for a Spanish version of Kites. While the Hindi and English versions would cater to a mass audience across the globe keen on seeing Hrithik Roshan, we must not disregard Barbara Mori’s fan following in the Spanish belt.”
According to Lamba, the global interest in watching Hrithik romance Mori puts Kites in a very different league from other Bollywood films. Reliance Big Pictures is now looking at releasing a larger number of prints globally than even 3 Idiots.1700 prints of 3 Idiots had been released in India. Kites is expected to top that figure with approximately 1750 prints in India.
“We release around 2300 prints across the world. There will be 250 prints in the US and 100 in the UK,” informs Lamba.
The English language version will be released in the US a week after the Hindi version. “The only difference between the Hindi and English versions would be the length. Brett Ratner who has edited the English version took out all the songs and some of scenes which were seen too Indian in spirit. Otherwise both versions are the same in spirit. Out in the West, audiences don’t have the patience to sit through lengthy foreign films. In the English version that Brett Ratner has cut, everything happens super-fast and snappy,” says Lamba.
The length of the Spanish version is expected to be the same as the English version of Kites.
Though it is not being said out aloud, Reliance Big Pictures hopes Kites would top the box-office statistics of 3 Idiots in the international market where the 2-hour-40-minute playing time of 3 Idiots was seen to be big hindrance for a wider acceptance by a non-diaspora audience.
The producers are looking at Kites as the Indian film that would finally crack the Western market.
“Kites is not what the Bollywood formula is perceived to be in the West. The language of love is universal. We’re hopeful that this film will get a new profile of western audiences interested in Indian cinema,” says Lamba with finger crossed.
Barbara Mori is expected to play Hrithik’s host in Mexico when the Spanish version of Kites releases. In a cute manifestation of a cultural exchange programme, she has even offered to do a Spanish film with Hrithik.
Aamir Khan launches National School Sanitation Initiative campaign
April 28, 2010

In the past, Aamir Khan has been associated with many public awareness and social campaigns, such as the ‘Athithidevo Bhava’ campaign promoting tourism in India or the campaign to encourage people to go out and Vote. Now the ‘Perfectionist’ Khan has been appointed as the Brand Ambassador of the National School Sanitation Initiative by the Ministries of Urban Development and HRD.
Aamir, who in fact was holidaying with his family in France, took a day’s break yesterday to return to Delhi and attend a function where he spoke on the importance of creating awareness about cleanliness in schools across the country.
One will have to wait and watch if Aamir’s message comes across strongly and helps in bringing about a change in the sanitation levels in schools across the country.
SRK explains meaning of the title Ra.One
April 28, 2010

This year is likely to see the release of two big films with similar sounding titles. Yes…we are indeed referring to Mani Ratnam’s Raavan and Shah Rukh Khan’s home production Ra.One. However, the two similar sounding films are as different as chalk and cheese when it comes to their plotlines. While Mani’s Abhi-Ash starrer is a modern-day adaptation of the mythological epic Ramayan, SRK’s flick is a highly stylized film with a lot of gizmos and gadgets.
Coming to Ra.One, while it is known that SRK plays a super-hero kind of character in the film, what is not known is the fact that the title Ra.One is the acronym for ‘Random Access-Version One’. This fact has been confirmed by the Superstar himself on Twitter. Says SRK, “Ra.One means Random Access- Version One, u will understand when u see the film. The Superhero is called G.One. Ra.One site will be up soon.”
Meanwhile with his close friend and CEO of Red Chillies Entertainment- Bobby Chawla still admitted in the hospital, SRK has to even manage all the work related to production of Ra.One. SRK tweets, “Yes…wish Bobby my friend gets well sooner than soon. He is still in the hospital & the film is soo difficult in terms of production.”
Looks like Ra.One is indeed taking a toll on SRK as he not only has to perform some heavy duty action sequences but also has to manage all aspects related to production.
