Mallika to feature in pyar kiya toh darna kya song

January 5, 2008

Mallika SherawatRemember the immortal song Pyaar kiya toh darna kya performed by Madhubala in Mughal-EAzam? Well, now many decades later another actress is getting ready to dance on the same number.

And that person is Mallika Sherawat. She is all set to perform the number in her soon-to-be-released comedy caper Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam that has been produced by Ratan Jain and directed by Sanjay Chhel. Mallika’s film has got two things in common with the 60’s classic.

One is the title of the film and another the famous song Pyaar kiya toh darna kya made immortal by Madhubala’s dancing.

“The song Pyaar kiya toh darna Kya is one of the greatest songs in the history of Indian films. No one can ever make such a beautiful song nor can anyone copy Madhubala or forget her performance in the song,” says Anu Malik who has composed the new song. We hope it will be a visual delight for all Mallika fans.

Actresses should not strip off to boost their careers

January 5, 2008

Daryl Hannah Actress Daryl Hannah is furious with film directors who add nude scenes to movies without proper justification. The Splash star, 47, insists she has been the victim of many moviemakers who deviate from scripts and add extra nudity for no reason, and is urging other actresses not to strip off to boost their careers.

She says, “There have been many times when I have suddenly been confronted with a nude scene. I would say, ‘This isn’t in the script.’ And they would say, ‘Oh we’ve added it. We felt it was integral to the character’s development.’ There are some real sleazeballs around. I soon became wise enough to realise there are very few films in which nudity is important.”

Kylie Minogue wanted to start something brand new

January 5, 2008

Kylie MinogueThat she’s battled a life-threatening disease and is now back is reason enough to laud this feisty singer from the land down under. She’s now back on the road with a tour. Here’s she talks about the rhythm that keeps her going.

Q. It’s your 20th anniversary since The Locomotion and your tenth studio album. Given all the circumstances, was your mental preparation was any different this time?
A. Well, I think it’s safe to say I’ve never had to prepare like I have for this album before. Before I think I just rolled on, rolled on and this one is much more of a celebration than anything I’ve done before, with some room for reflection as well, which was good. Yeah, I think the preparation for it was probably finishing my Showgirl tour as in Homecoming because at that stage I just thought, ‘I haven’t sung in so long I don’t know how strong I’m going to be etc, etc. but was happy to be in the studio. I started work on this album a year and a half ago when the album was so far in the future who knew when it was going to be because no-one wanted to pressure me but I had to get back into the studio just to test myself and get some things off my chest, which I did, then went on tour, then finished the album.

Q. The Showgirl tour had to be halted when your illness was diagnosed – so to complete what we now know as the Homecoming Tour must have been really important to you…
A. Oh, yeah, yeah. It wasn’t til the end of Homecoming that I, and probably a little time after that, that I realized…I have this vision. I can’t really explain. I don’t quite have the right words yet to explain what it was like, but I have a vision, that’s me just running across the fields still going, ‘Ah, ha, ha. Don’t try to stop me,’ and that was my goal. It was something of a blessing in disguise, so to finish that was a great relief and an inspiration that I knew that this is what I do. It’s what I love doing. It has its challenges and I’m ready for more.

Q. Now, the process of getting ready to record. When you’ve got a new album coming up, do you listen to loads of music, or avoid listening altogether?
A. I don’t consciously do either. I trust that the people with whom I’m working. They’re the ones with their fingers on the pulse for that. They know what’s going on. They know the latest, greatest. I really like to work with my A&R and I go in just doing more my bit which is being myself and not. I don’t want to be too swayed and go in and say I’d like to sound like this or like that. What’s most important for me at that time is to make it mine.

Q. So, putting the songs together for a new album, you’ve been helped and guided by Jamie Nelson and Miles Leonard in A&R. For those of us outside the music biz, what does A&R do? Or indeed mean?
A. Who knows what A&R do? I think they’re basically there just to take the mick. Aside from driving me absolutely round the bend sometimes it is worth it in the end. No, I only joke because I love them so much and they do drive me round the bend. But, artist and repertoire, they, if I was to compare it to filmmaking, they would be producing. The music producer is directing and I’m still performing, taking guidance from them as to where they think this album should go, taking on board what worked or what perhaps didn’t work so well on previous albums, and guiding me, directing me.

Q. So the new album is called X.Why?
A. That’s quite a long story. The album has had various working titles along the way. The one prior to X, I won’t say what it was because it would just cause all sorts of chat, but that song didn’t end up on the album and then, at this late stage in the game we thought, ‘Ooh.’ It was all sorted. That was going to be the name and over the past few months a lot of the fans online had been calling the album, Kylie X. Whether they’d made that up or they thought that it was called Kylie X and so we thought, ‘Well, that makes sense.’ It’s my tenth studio album and there we go, X, nice, clean and simple.

Q. So you have recorded quite a lot in Scandinavia with those hot dance outfits, Bloodshy and Avant, Cutfather etc. Do you think there is a real difference in how different places sound?
A. Yeah, I think there wouldn’t be much point to go there if it didn’t sound, if it didn’t have its own sound and quality and we’ve tried to have a good balance on the album, of, particularly that Bloodshy and Avant… It’s so production led so I was happy to go there and do a lot of my performance knowing that they’re going to play with it and if it comes out sounding anything like me that’ll be great and then other songs that are very simple like ‘Cosmic’ with ‘Eg White’.

Q. About the songs, the first single is ‘2Hearts’. Great track!
A. That was a pretty simple process because the demo was done and like most demos that make it to me that were all pretty well, like A&R and I have decided that we’ll do it, it is what it is so it’s just a case of going through and repeating the parts. They came to London, which was very nice, and we did that in one day and we actually knocked out another song that day as well which didn’t make the album but yeah, it’s one of those tracks where I knew it would be cut up so the recording can seem a bit fractured or something because I’m not singing as you would do a live vocal so it’s like, ‘Do this bit, do this bit, do this bit,’ and almost working backwards from how they’d effected the vocal to what it was before they’d effected it which I think is fine as long as you’ve got other songs to balance that.

Q. ‘Heart Beat Rock’, a song about the boys watching the girls getting ready to hit the floor. Good single material!
A. It’s Biff and The Freemasons, neighbours of his, and apparently they’re working on a nice re-mix for me of The One, as we speak. That’s a lot of them, huh. I just worked with Biff on the track and we were just delighted to be able to get the word Michelangelo in there. It’s the little things that float our boat and I think ‘The One’ is a more traditional Kylie track.

Q. “Like a pure white diamond/I’ll shine on and on”, is a line from a song on your website. Suits you!
A. Well, that was just when I was coming out of treatment and just started to step back into the world, I wrote with the Scissor Sisters prior to touring and the main song we did was ‘White Diamond’, which was really, it’s not on X but it was definitely a major part of it because it was a song that was fitting for that moment and it was good to be able to finish that tour with something brand new and something that spoke of the time that I’ve been through.

Ali Merchant is still single

January 4, 2008

Ali MerchantAli Merchant, who plays Akshat in AmberDhara, is a strong believer in destiny. Dubbing his journey as an actor, the best thing that could have happened to him, Ali says, “I never thought when I started off as an actor that I would be here one day.”

A commerce graduate, Ali had always wanted to get into theatre. After winning a personality contest at college he decided to venture into acting. “It was a little difficult to get started. Since I looked too young, I had to groom myself to look a little mature after which many projects started materialising,” he reveals.
Ali describes himself as a kid at heart. He says, “I am very inquisitive, affectionate and high on life.” While at work, Ali is always up to pranks, “I do a lot of masti on the sets. I like to maintain a good working relationship with everybody, right from the spot boys to the top guys. It’s important to create good vibes, one wrong step can spoil things.”

While Ali loves the idea of doing reality television at a later stage of his career, he does confess that he’d want to do a dance reality show. “As a trained dancer, I’d like to take part in one. But right now, with some of my new shows on air, I’d rather wait for one of them to wind up before I think of something else.” Working round the clock means, Ali barely ever has time to indulge in any of his hobbies. He says, “I have been shooting 18 hours on an average for the past one month. That hardly leaves me with time to pursue any hobby. Although my favourite pastime has been swimming, dancing and clubbing. When I get some time I like to jam at a friend’s place. That apart I like meeting a lot of people from different cities.” Ali confirms that he’s single but claims he’s definitely looking out. He reveals, “I am definitely awaiting someone’s presence in my life. Although I spend more than half my waking hours shooting, the minute my shot is canned, I am dead to the world.” So, what would his ideal girl be like? “She should share the same interests as me. I don’t believe that opposites attract. She should be funky, a drama queen, high on energy and a little confused in life.” So, in case someone fits Ali’s wishlist, you do know what to do!

Music is of utmost importance for Vasundhara Das

January 4, 2008

Vasundhara DasVasundhara Das is on a creative high these days. The singer-actor along with coparticipant Mohit Chauhan got to create a lot of interesting stuff for the music show Mission Ustaad on 9X. Vasundhara is glad she got an opportunity to do something different. But isn’t it surprising that most of the music industry is on TV these days than in recording studios. “Why not?” she asks. “People have come to recognise those behind the scenes because of such shows. Also there’s no harm in it because the shows are music-based and provide entertainment,” she says. But what about talent hunts? What does she think of them? “They are certainly a platform for new talent to get noticed, but does that really happen?” she wonders. But then how is she doing a television reality show? “Mission Ustaad is different from the -run-of-the mill programmes. I did my research before agreeing to be a part of it,” says Vasundhara.

Stage shows are something that Vasundhara loves to be part of. “It’s very exciting. You are so alive when you are on the stage. It is the best way to communicate with your audience,” she says. And what about acting? “For me a lot of things happened at the same time. My first movie, album and song released round the same time. So, I was doing a bit of everything,” she says.

Music obviously is of utmost importance to Vasundhara, who loves to work on albums. “Collaborating with artists whether from India or abroad is great. It makes you more accepting of things that are not known to you,” she says. And despite the fact that music takes up a lot of her time Vasundhara is involved in social causes too. She has been involved in various causes like the drive against tree-cutting or campaigning for AIDS. But Vasundhara believes that one must be totally committed to a cause. “Just giving your name or lending support isn’t enough, one must go all the way,” she says.

Malini Kapoor wont compromise

January 4, 2008

Malini kapoorIt’s been two months that Malini Kapoor walked out from SaharaOne’s Zaara… Pyar Ki Saugat and she hasn’t regretted her decision. The actress who played Zeenat, left the serial as it was going in for a generation leap. “Obviously, I don’t want to play an old woman at this stage of my career,” says Malini. She adds that it’s not about people stereotyping actors in certain kind of roles, but about how you feel about it. “What’s important is that I need to be convinced about what I’m doing. Even though most of the stuff you see on television these days is so weird, somewhere down the line, you need to believe in what you’re doing. I couldn’t see myself playing a mother to people my age and that’s the reason I left the show,” she says, adding that it had been a good association with the makers of the show and there were no hard feelings.

In between, Malini’s kept herself busy doing episodics, something which she used to do a lot before Zaara. She wants to now get back to doing a daily, but Malini’s clear about one thing: “I don’t want to compromise. I will wait till some producer or director realises that in this race for newcomers and fresh faces, you also need some talent,” she adds. So would she like to try out something new, like a reality show? “I’m always ready for change, so why not?” she says.

The actress has also been meeting some people for Bollywood. “Let’s see if anything works out,” she says. At the end of the day, Malini says that she’s looking for work satisfaction. “Unlike some others, I don’t have any side business. Acting is all I have,” she concludes with a smile.

Sandeep Rajora is back as a dancer

January 4, 2008

Sandeep RajoraSandeep Rajora’s back in action! Actually, dancing! The actor is playing a cool dance trainer and choreographer in Deeya and Tony Singh’s Jhoome Jiya Re. Sandeep will make an entry in the show next week with a dance number. He will be performing to the Bollywood number Shaka Laka Boom Boom. “I have practised the number only twice, but I’m sure it will go off well,” says an excited Sandeep.

So is he a good dancer? “I have the rhythm. I’ve just been working on steps and co-ordination,” he says. His all-time favourite dancers are Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing and Michael Jackson in The Way You Make Me Feel. Back home, it’s Hrithik Roshan and Shahid Kapoor who he believes are fantastic dancers. “Hopefully I’ll be able to emulate them,” says Sandeep. Talking about his role in the serial, he says it’s a character like that of Shah Rukh Khan in Chak De India. “In Chak De the coach’s approach is not stern but friendly, that’s exactly how my character in the show is. On TV, the kind of roles are very limited. There’s not much of a variety available. I’m happy I’ve got a different role to play.”

There’s also another new show in the offing that he’s looking forward to. But why was Sandeep missing from the small screen past many months? “There were a couple of shows I was almost to do, but things got delayed. I guess 2008 had to set in. But I did a lot of commercials last year,” he says.

Sandeep’s now set for 2008. “I am hoping for lots of work, lots of good things to happen. I can see the optimism already setting in,” he smiles. And what’s on the personal front? “Personal front looks bright,” he says, not wanting to reveal more. Right now it’s only work, work and work, it seems!
