Minissha Lamba is toothless now
June 26, 2007
If you find Minissha Lamba sounding like her mouth is full of food, don’t be surprised.
Fact is, the actress has just got her wisdom tooth removed and not just one, but two at one go! “There were two of them growing together so I got them removed. I look like a villain now!” she laughs. On the workfront, Minissha’s busy with Anamika, Dus Kahaniyaan, Shourya and Kidnap.
“I have been experimenting with all kinds of roles. I’m playing a Punjabi girl in one and an investigative journalist in another. It’s fun doing various kinds of roles so one doesn’t get bored of doing them,” she says. Wise girl Minissha. And we thought all that wisdom would vanish along with your wisdom teeth!
Juhi Babbar getting married this month
June 26, 2007
After Abhiash tied the knot a few months ago, wedding bells are set to ring in the house of Raj Babbar. The actor-politician’s daughter Juhi, also an actor, will be getting married to longtime boyfriend, filmmaker Bijoy Nambiar, on June 27.
Informs a source close to the Babbar family, “The wedding will be a grand affair and will be attended by a number of bigwigs from the political and Bollywood circles.” The wedding festivities, says the source, began with a special lunch party hosted by the Nambiar family on June 24 followed by a sangeet ceremony and a mehndi function on June 26.
The wedding function on June 27 will see a South Indian wedding in the morning, followed by saat pheras being taken according to North Indian customs the same evening. The couple will later fly down to Bijoy’s hometown in Kerala for the wedding reception, adds the source.
Talking about the time he met Juhi, the groom Bijoy says, “It was during the shooting of my film Reflection that I met Juhi. And we’ve been seeing each other since then.”
Rahul Bose – Captian of Indian Cricket Team
June 26, 2007
It’s not for namesake. But yes, actor Rahul Bose plays the captain of the Indian cricket team in the recently released Chain Kuli Ki Main Kuli.
So, does that mean he is playing Rahul Dravid? “No, it just means that I am playing a captain and not Rahul Dravid in particular,” says Rahul. But for his role, Rahul admits to observing a few captains.
“Captains are made of a certain substance — their body language, determination, everything is worth observing. And I have observed the likes of Allan Border, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly et al for my role.” Well, let’s hope Rahul leads his team to victory this innings.
Punjab Da Puttar – Bobby Deol
June 26, 2007
Bobby Deol is clearly the man of the moment, with Jhoom Barabar Jhoom having released and Apne and Naqaab waiting to hit the box office soon.
From loverboy, to studboy, to angry hero and now a comic hero — Bobby Deol has come a long way.
• Well, what can I say? It’s not like I didn’t attempt comedy earlier. I tried it with Hum To Mohabbat Karega and Chor Machaye Shor but unfortunately, it didn’t work. I was disillusioned with it; but then I got this incredible dual character of a suave London guy and a momma’s boy and all the hard work put in by the crew paid off big. Believe me, I’ve spent plenty of sleepless, frightened Fridays before this.
Your Punjabi-munda-in-London act has been much appreciated by critics and fans alike
• Now who said that was an act? I am the son of Punjab-da-puttar after all. It came naturally to me. Here I was struggling to make all my characters work and all, and here Adi (Chopra) called and asked me to meet him. Offering me this dream character that was (almost) me. I said, ‘Dude, I’m doing it. I’ll just be me.” I consciously tried not to blindly ape my father’s comic characters from Seeta aur Geeta and Chupke Chupke but what to do? We have the same gestures, the same mannerisms. And it’s not ‘method’ acting. It’s just Deol-naturalism.
Your dad’s first screen smooch is the talk of the town.
What is your comment?
• You know, my dad is a true man. A man’s man. Every manly thing he does, he does so well. Even his first screen kiss in so many years, he’s done shyly but so beautifully. That’s the kind of man he is. And that’s the kind of man every man aspires to be.
In Apne you will share frame with two big (literally too) stars.
How do you hope to hold your own?
• It’s an intimidating thought, the fact that I’m sharing screen space with two giant stars. But I’m not intimidated! Because we are a real life family. And in Apne too, we play a family — one that reflects every family in the true sense.
Post Shakalaka Boom Boom you were rather miffed at the way your role shaped out.
Has it made you choosier?
• It’s no time to talk about water under the bridge. Suneel (Darshan) has given me some wonderful hits in the past and I’m grateful to him. It’s just that sometimes somethings don’t workout the way you expect them to.
Just like you and Sunny, your respective kids too are different from each other.
Is the equation between the cousins similar to yours?
• Our kids are not like cousins. They’re like real brothers. Our families have always been like that. We’ve all been brothers with all our cousins, it was something we were ingrained with as children. And now our kids are growing up the same way. They’re so amazing together. They can teach us elders a thing or two.
Bipasha Basu with Saif Ali Khan no signs of BF John
June 26, 2007
It was a packed Bollywood brigade at China House, Grand Hyatt Mumbai, on Saturday night with young Bollywood at it’s dining and wining best.
Karan Johar, who’s back in Mumbai after his London trip, Zayed Khan, Shamita Shetty, Rocky S and Dia Mirza amongst others were spotted partying the night away. So, what’s unusual about that? Well, Bipasha Basu wearing a stunning number was hanging out with none other than the latest singleton in town, Saif Ali Khan. And no, boyfriend John Abraham was nowhere on the scene.
The two seemed to be having a good time in each other’s company, the motley group of friends notwithstanding. Bipasha danced and drank the night away and it didn’t seem like she was missing John the least bit. They had come in a group and left with the same group too. So, what’s with John and Bipasha screaming hoarse about being together?
No problems between Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan
June 25, 2007
For those who were waiting to see deathly tension to erupt on the sets of Pradeep Sarkar’s Laga Chunri Mein Daag after what’s widely been labelled the wedding snub, there was disappointing news. There were absolutely no cold vibes between Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan when he returned two work after a two-month break.
“How can there be?” says a close friend of both the stars. “Rani and Abhishek have done four films. They’re seen as the new Amitabh-Jaya pair. And forget that. They’re so comfortable with each other. Yes, not being invited to the wedding did hurt Rani. She always thought of the Bachchans as a part of her extended family and hoped they considered her the same. Initially, she was upset about not being invited. But the minute she met Abhishek last week after all grievances dissolved instantly.”
Rani and Abhishek are back having fun on the sets as though nothing has happened.
“Nothing about Abhishek has changed after marriage. He’s still a major prankster filled with masti. When Rani realised this, she immediately dropped her defences. The party spirit that prevails every time Abhishek is around is back. The set for Laga Chunri Mein Daag resembles a picnic spot,” says the source.
Joining the revellery are Kunal Kapoor and Konkona Sensharma. “In fact Abhishek has known both the director Pradeep Sarkar and Kunal for years. Abhishek often jokes that he wants to be as thin as Kunal,” says the source. The buzz on the sets of Laga Chunri… is that Abhishek hasn’t changed one bit. “Marriage hasn’t made him less bratty. It would take a lot more than marriage to the most beautiful woman in India to change Abhishek,” jokes Abhishek’s buddy.
Ajay Devgan talks about his career move
June 24, 2007
Was it difficult to break out of your action hero image?
No, I think I was lucky to get the right roles at the right time with the right directors. That gave me scope to do lots of different things. I did Phool aur Kaante then Jigar and then Divyashakti which wasn’t an action film. Then came Dilwale which was a big hit followed by Zakhm and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Like that, three-four films came together, so it wasn’t that difficult.
What’s important, critical acclaim or mass popularity?
It should be a balance of both. Nothing works singlehandedly. It’s very important for critics to appreciate your work, it gives you satisfaction, and also supports the film and makes people see it. The second aspect too is important for people to see your film and appreciate it because that’s how the collections come.
Action, comedy, romance — what’s your forte?
I really don’t think there is a forte. I should be convinced and charged about the character and the film. Then I tend to do better, but later if I feel that the film is not working or I’m not enjoying playing the character, then it becomes very difficult for me to work. I know it’s not professional of me but that’s how it is. I start losing interest.
Your character Omkara was the central character in that film yet Saif walked away with all the praise…
Nothing like that. There was a hero, there was a villain and I think Saif did brilliantly well. I really think the kind of appreciation I got was good. So it was a balanced thing. Somebody had to do this and somebody had to do that. If I had been asked to do Saif’s role then I wouldn’t have done it, only for one reason that I have done a few negative roles in the recent past. It was getting monotonous for me. I was happier playing Omkara than Langda Tyagi.
You’re playing Veeru’s character in Ram Gopal Verma’s remake of Sholay. What should the audience expect from it?
Sholay has shaped up very well and I’m also waiting for its release. The audience cannot think about the earlier film because the whole concept of this film is different. The setting is urban, the humour is urban and the attitudes too. When you change the situation of the film everything changes. So I don’t think there can be any comparison.
You’re turned director with U, Me Aur Hum. How is it like to be in the director’s seat?
Nothing different, really. I’m just doing what I was earlier doing when I used to be an assistant director.
Kajol is working in the film. How’s it like to direct your wife?
She’s a great actress and we share a comfort zone. As for who calls the shots, come and see on the sets.
It’s seen that off-screen couples don’t make good pairs on-screen…
That’s not true. We did Pyar To Hona Hi Tha and Ishq and both worked well. If it’s a good film it works, if not then it flops.
Lastly, how do you rate yourself as an actor?
I’m nobody to decide such a thing. Everybody thinks they’re the best. I think it’s for the audience to decide.
Salman Khan empathises with Paris Hilton
June 24, 2007
If there’s one person who can understand and empathise with what Paris Hilton is going through in the slammer, it’s Salman Khan. Although the hotel heiress’ crime (DUI) would pale in comparison with the Bollywood actor’s (he was sentenced to five years in prison for poaching a rare black buck in Rajasthan, but later granted bail.
He also ran over a man while driving drunk in 2002), Salman knows what it’s like to spend time behind bars. “When you are in there, there is no one more important than you. You have to handle being alone. You have to love yourself,” says Salman. The actor said that being alone gave him time to think about his life and what went wrong with it, and hopes the same happens with Paris.

Myths and facts of maintaining good hair
June 21, 2007
In India, hair is a culture apart from it being your crowning glory. You have cultural festivals like mundan associated with hair. Your well being is associated with hair. For eg: “bal bachhe kaise hai?” and obviously there are many beliefs and myths associated with hair. Women have learned about their hair from their mothers and grandmothers down the ages. Hair care tips have been passed from generation to generation and so, even today, with the wonders of science and technology all around us, most of us continue to look to age old wisdom for advise. While of course, many of these home truths that we cling to do have a grain of truth in them, in the context of modern living, they need to be firmly qualified. Here are a few common beliefs that need to be considered before they are blindly believed.
Dr Sonal Shah, India’s First Certified Woman Trichologist take time out on this beliefs and myths and dos and don’t:
Myth: Is mundan compulsory for a child? Fact: Despite the fact that it has become almost mandatory to shave a baby’s head at least twice, in the hope of promoting good hair growth, there is no evidence to suggest that shaving helps. The quality of our hair is determined by a number of factors. It is very important to have a balanced diet, rich in proteins. Our hair also requires minerals like iron, copper and zinc in the right proportions and deficiency of these will affect the condition of our hair.
This holds good even for body hair, where many women shy away from the razor although it is one of the most convenient and safe modes of hair removal
Myth: Standing on the head helps to grow hair (Shershasan)
Fact: The fact is that we cannot grow the hair. Hair follicles need more than blood flow to grow hair. Standing on your head to increase blood flow to your scalp, may be great for your gymnastic skills, but will have no effect on your hair.
Myth: Cutting hair frequently will make it grow long faster. Fact: The fact is that we cannot really hurry our hair in its growth process but we can keep it healthy by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and washing and brushing it correctly. Trimming the ends of the hair will help in getting rid of split ends. Myth: Oiling is not good for the hair.
Fact: Despite the fact that oiling performs the essential function of scalp-conditioning, it will not stop hair from falling. Oiling is a pre-requisite to condition the scalp.
Here are a few hair do’s and don’ts:
Do: Shampoo your hair. Women in India seem to have an unfounded fear of shampooing. Shampoo is merely a cleansing agent and whether you use it in the form of soap or a liquid makes no difference, as long it is suited to your hair type. Moreover, shampoo has no effect on hair loss. Don’t: Wash your hair too often. It is harmful to the hair to have a continuous supply of moisture applied to it, but shampoo is not the culprit. Rather it is advisable not to wash your hair more than thrice a week (with or without shampoo), unless you find it distinctly greasy or dirty. Don’t: Try shaving your head or oiling it to stimulate hair growth. Despite the fact that it has become almost mandatory to shave a baby’s head at least twice, in the hope of promoting good hair growth, there is no evidence to suggest that shaving helps. This holds good even for body hair, where many women shy away from the razor although it is one of the most convenient and safe modes of hair removed. Despite the fact that oiling performs the essential function of scalp conditioning it will not stop hair from falling if you are not having a hair loss problem, nor will it accelerate the rate of hair regrowth. Do: Make sure you have a balanced diet, rich in proteins. Our hair also requires minerals like iron, copper and zinc in the right proportions and deficiency of these will affect the condition of our hair. More importantly, if you do suspect that you are losing hair excessively, it would be advisable to pay a visit to a Trichologist.
