Why Tara Sharma doesn’t like the Carribbean
May 30, 2007
Tara Sharma’s having a tough time working in the Caribbean islands. She’s been there for a couple of weeks shooting for Dulha Mil Gaya, and in spite of the great weather Tara’s craving to get back home.
“What makes shooting in the islands of Trinidad and Tobago tough is the fact that this place is so much fun. It’s a whole new world. It makes you want to go on a life-long vacation. But that’s the hitch, you see. It’s a very laid-back culture here, everything moves at a slow-pace. That makes the shooting process more challenging. I’ve been away from home for a long time; I was travelling before I got here, so now I am waiting to get back home,” says Tara.
Why Bipasha Basu likes work out
May 30, 2007
It’s no mean task being a movie star, and a successful one at that. There are thousands, if not millions of fans looking up to you, emulating your every move. And Bipasha Basu knows that well.
When we asked her why she was such a fitness freak, she laughed and replied, “I was not always so. I’ve just been more conscious about it since the last one-and-a-half years. It was an added incentive. I think it’s very important for us to look good because we’re in the entertainment industry and people look up to us. When there are so many people idolising you day and night, it becomes a responsibility. You have to give them the best when so much money is invested in us through the audience, through the producer. That is the least we can do.” We definitely second that!
Kim Sharma and Yuvraj Singh break up
May 30, 2007
Not all love stories end on a happy note and certainly not in Bollywood. So after a whirling romance, Kim Sharma’s relationship with Indian cricket’s rising star Yuvraj Singh ended on a sour note.
“Actually they split immediately after Yuvraj came back from the World Cup, but it was not made public for reasons best known to them,” says a friend of Kim. Unfortunately, the break-up was given a nasty turn by some detractors. Whatever the case, we think the two need time off to recover from the whole issue. Let’s leave them to it, shall we guys?
Heart Exercise
May 30, 2007
The hardworking heart
Perhaps busier than the busiest executive is the heart. Contracting 100,000 times a day and pumping five to six litres of blood each minute, the heart is undoubtedly the most important organ in the body. What is more, it pumps 20 times the normal volume when you exercise.
Why exercise?
You could ask, why work the
heart when it’s already working so hard? The heart like any other muscle works better and more efficiently when it is in shape. And there’s no better way to keep it in shape than regular exercising. As you exercise, your heart rate (the number of times your heart beats per minute) increases and more blood is pumped to muscles all over the body. With regular exercise, the heart muscles enlarge and you will require less effort for doing ordinary things like walking up a flight of stairs or running for the bus.
Hey, isn’t regular activity enough?
You may think that the daily grind at your workplace or home would suffice for your exercise needs. But that’s far from true. Regular aerobic exercises when performed adequately condition the heart and lungs. You don’t need to train like a marathon runner to become physically active; just incorporate an exercise regime you are comfortable with in your daily routine. In the beginning you could start with 30 minutes of exercise, three to five times a week.
Your heart protection exercise regimen:
Work out an exercise plan for your heart. Try to get enough cardio activity to burn approximately 900 to 1200 calories a week.
Pick from these options.
• Simply walk: Just put on your walking shoes and walk anywhere, anytime, as convenient. Calories burned: 300 an hour.
• Walk uphill: This increases
walking intensity and shapes the legs and hips. Calories burned: 400 an hour.
• Swim: Challenge your muscles in water. A safe, low-impact exercise that works the whole body. Calories burned: 400 an hour.
• Cycle: Outdoor cycling is a great exercise for toning the lower body. Calories burned: 350 an hour.
• Play tennis/ squash/ Badminton: Calories burned: 400 an hour.
• Skip/speed jog (interval): Burn more calories in 25 minutes by interval training. Skip for two minutes. Jog (fast jog) for three minutes. Repeat for 25 minutes.
Calories burned: 300 in 25 minutes.
• Jog on a trampoline: Bounce on a trampoline. Calories burned: 300 an hour.
• Run: Pick up pace, feel the power in movement. A great exercise high! Calories burned: 400 an hour.
• Punch and kick: Buy a punching bag or speed bag and gloves. Punch using arms and kick using legs. Calories burned: 400 an hour.
• Go Dancing: Try salsa, rock-‘n’- roll or even belly dancing. Or just pick your favourite music at home and move to the beat. Calories burned: 300 an hour.
Some No – No’s If you are looking to keeping your heart healthy, stay far away from these
• Smoking
• Obesity
• Stress
• Diabetes
• No exercise
• High Cholesterol
• High blood pressure
Preventing heart disease:
A regular exercise regimen will keep your heart muscles strong and will ensure that the blood vessels will work smoothly. As you exercise regularly, your body will get more resistant to stress, heart attacks and other heart diseases.
Exercise requires skill
You could develop your own exercise method — like choosing to walk the stairs instead of the elevator, cycling to the nearby store instead of taking the car. You don’t need a new year for a resolution to keep healthy. Make your resolution right now and do it for your heart’s sake. Happy exercising!
Blowing exercise myths
• Exercise is tiring — Far from tiring you, exercise can reduce the fatigue and stress levels in your body making you feel energised after your workout.
• Exercise takes time — Busy as you may be, just 30 minutes of your time can make wonders for you. Even if you may not be able to devote that time at a stretch, you could break that session into two 15 minutes sessions.
• All exercises give you the same benefits — Different exercises give different benefits. Regular aerobic exercises will improve the efficiency of the heart and burn calories, resistance training exercises will improve your body’s strength, and flexibility exercises will increase overall suppleness.
• The older you are, the less exercise you will need — Age is no factor at all. Exercise is for one and all. You could ask a trainer to devise an exercise regimen based on your goals, preferences and even any medical condition that you may have.
Bollywood celebrates World Anti Tobacco day
May 30, 2007
What’s the best way to spread awareness about anti-smoking? Involve the youth of the city, and add a sprinkling of celebrities to the cause. That’s exactly what the Cancer Patients Aid Association did the other afternoon on the occasion of World Anti-Tobacco day (May 31st).
A drawing competition where children from across the city coloured their canvasses with their thoughts on a smoke-free environment was followed by an interaction with actors Sonali Kulkarni and Neetu Chandra, both of who spoke about the dangers of smoking.
Meanwhile, at another place and on another day, but to spread the same message were John Abraham and a very long-haired Milind Soman. The fact that these stars took valuable time off to spread the word just goes to show that it’s not worth letting your life go up in smoke!
Kim Sharma bhabi?
May 30, 2007
Kim Sharma has just returned from a hectic shooting schedule from Cyprus where she was with Amrita Arora.
The girl is feeling on-top-of-the world, what with the stunts she had to do at the grueling schedule. After all, the film — Boomerang — is based on Charlie’s Angels! Spotted her the other night, having a girl’s night out, looking fit and fab. She was having a nice time sipping her juice when two guys, with thick north Indian accents addressed her as “Bhabhi”. The look on Kim’s face was to die for. And the two guys almost froze in fear! “Bhabhi my foot,” she said and had the poor fellows running for cover. Well, never ask a woman her age and never over-estimate it either!
Gabbar becomes Ajgar
May 30, 2007
Filmmaker Ramgopal Varma is riding the horns of a dilemma with his new movie. The title of the movie has been jinxed right from the start. Varma ran into copyright issues when rather grandly he first decided to call it Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay. The word ‘Sholay’ was what was causing the problem. So the director settled on Ram Gopal Varma Ka Gabbar, next. Apparently, even that ran into trouble as ‘Gabbar’ too was registered under the Copyright Act by the original makers of Sholay.
There is more bad news for Varma. A Bollywood source said he may have to change the name of the main character in his movie to something like Ajgar Singh as the producers of Sholay have taken objections to the same. “It won’t be a surprise if Varma’s film is now called Ajgar Singh,” said the source.
“Although Sholay is considered to be a generic word, and there have been several films made in the past like Ramgarh Ke Sholay and Garhwali Sholay, it is unclear if the argument of copyright over the word holds true. For instance, Ekta Kapoor is already making a film title Gabbar Singh in Bhojpuri,” added the source. Varma has already changed the name of two important characters in his movie, Basanti and Thakur to Ghungroo and Narsimhan respectively. While the original Sholay had Basanti as the tangewali, Varma’s Ghungroo is an autorikshawali. Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay had Gabbar chopping off both the hands of Thakur Baldev Singh; Varma’s film has Narsimhan (played by Mohanlal) losing both his wrists. Varma, meanwhile, has always maintained that his is a tribute to Sholay and not a copy of the movie. Bollywood believes that it won’t be a bad idea for the filmmaker to ultimately change the title to, say, Ram Gopal Varma ka Ajgar, because the movie has already generated enough curiosity even before its release.

A slick diamond robbery takes place in India. The robber is none other than Rocky (Chunky Pandey) whos the nephew of Chowksi (Gulshan Grover), a Don based in London. Chowksi tells Rocky to sell the diamond to his brother Lalwani (Asrani) in Dubai.
Lalwani is a dealer of smuggled gems and jewellery. But he warns Rocky to stay away from guns and gambling, which is his weakness, to ensure nothing goes wrong.
On the other hand, the local mafia in Dubai, Moscow Chikna (Arbaaz Khan) is torturing Choubey (Paresh Rawal) because he was unable to return the money he had loaned from Moscow Chikna. Choubey owns a junk shop and was facing major loses.
He gets information about the diamond robbery from one of his informants. He is also made aware of the involvement of the International mafia Chowksi.
To keep a low profile, Moscow Chikna asks Choubey to get the diamond for him, only after which he will leave him. Choubey gets along with Raja (Shahid Kapoor), a fast robber, and Tina (Ayesha Takia) whos his niece to plan the robbery of the precious diamond.
Luckee (Viveik Oberoi) and Bob (Suresh Menon) own a small video and game parlour in Dubai. To earn a little extra money they also promote new fighters who want to take part in illegal boxing matches in Dubai.
J.D (Zakir Hussain) is a big underworld Don, who controls all of Dubais illegal gambling and fights. J.Ds men also get girls from India to Dubai promising them jobs. But once in Dubai, the girls are forced to work in dance clubs. One of them is Payal (Sameera Reddy). But Payal manages to escape from there. J.D is very upset as he really likes her. He orders his men to find her.
J.Ds men are looking for Payal in the market place. Right there are Bhabhi (Sharmila Tagore) and Bhaiya (Om Puri) who are quiet shaken when they see Payal being taken away by the men.
They call Munna (Sunny Deol), who is Bhaiyas brother, to save her. Munna enters in a heroic manner and knocks them out. They all then take Payal home. Payal eventually falls in love with Munna.
Munna owns a garage and is known for his strength and power. He is strong and very impulsive. He can knock out anyone and just about anyone in one blow! He doesnt think before getting into a fight because he is aware of his potency. Because of this, he is also approached by Luckee to wrestle with some of the strongest men around.
Bhabhis son dies in an accident two years back, which completely shakes her. Munna then finds Raja, who is a look alike of her dead son. Munna hires Raja to play her son for a handsome amount. Raja is anyway a crook and does anything for money. He agrees to do so.
Along with this, Raja is now planning the robbery with Choubey and Tina. They hire Pattu (Johnny Lever), whos famous for his driving skills, to help them flee after the robbery.
When Rocky lands in Dubai, he gets in touch with Moscow Chikna to buy guns. But he is well aware who Rocky is. He asks Rocky not to pay for the guns instead bet on his behalf at J.Ds illegal bookies. Moscow then instructs Choubey, Raja and Tina to kidnap Rocky outside the bookies.
Outside the bookies when they do not get hold of anything they plan to rob the bookies. But again they come out empty handed. As they come out they are over whelmed to find Rocky. They kidnap him and take him to their junk shop. Moscow Chikna shoots Rocky and takes the diamond away leaving them with the body.
Meanwhile J.D learns that some men attempted to rob his bookies. Agitated he comes to Choubeys junk shop. There he finds out that Rocky was the one who was carrying the precious diamond. He tells Choubey and gang that he will spare them only if they get him the diamond.
Chowksi who comes down from London realizes that Rocky is missing. To find him he hires G9 (Jackie Shroff). Now here all the stories inter cross.
Now with all of them caught up together in this chase, the story takes a comical twist.
A lot of breaking bones for stealing stones ends up this bout with a complete knockout comedy!
Cheeni Kum
May 29, 2007
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Tabu, Paresh Rawal, Zohra Sehgal, Swini Khara
Directed by R. Balki
Rating: ****
The incandescent Tabu makes her ‘bitter’-half in this sweet-and-slender confection, run across the London fields… “Just to see if you’ve the energy to do anything after we get married,” she tells him her tongue firmly in cheek.
Check this out.
Cheeni Kum is probably the sauciest, sassiest, slickest, smoothest and most scrumptious romantic comedy you’ll see in the Hindi language in a long time.
She’s in London for a holiday. He is a cantankerous sarcastic chef who can’t take a snub even when it’s served up on a platter.
Menu rab da vaasta!
Lolita, go eat your art out. Cheeni Kam makes you forget there’s a difference of 30 years between the girl and, ahem ahem, the boy. That’s the magic of pure acting. The magic of two of the finest actors at work as they create an ebullient alchemy.
On the menu in this mellow ode to love’s luminous largesse are an 85 -year old mom (Zohra Sehgal) living life king-sized, a 7-year old terminally-ill girl (Swini Khara, the most prized discovery of the year) who watches claims the chef as her very intimate friend and watches all the adult DVDs he gets her, since she won’t get a chance to do so later.
Then there’s heroine’s Gandhian father who can’t stop reminding his damaad-to-be of his autumnal age. And last but certainly not the least in this feisty feast, there’s the churlish chef’s kitchen staff comprising some of the most sparkling cameo-actors you’ve seen.
Unarguably one of the finest directorial talents in this millennium, Balki just sweeps that age thing under the carpet.
Yes, the dialogues make pointed barbed references to what it’s like for two such generation-challenged people to come together and laugh at each other’s foibles.
It’s hard to decide in which capacity Balki scores higher marks… as director or dialogue writer. Caustic and crisp, mordant and modern, pithy and passionate….the words weave a minty magic across this intelligent yet spontaneous comedy of romantic errors.
Shakespeare meets Gulzar in this evocative and funny love story.
The flavour of the exchanges between the wry surly chef in London and the serene Indian girl from Delhi who makes the cardinal mistake of criticizing the arrogant chef’s Hyderabadi biryani, is so distinctly pungent and peppery you wonder which came first in the writer-director’s range of vision: the mix-matched couple or the words that they exchange to bring each other closer to that feeling which we sometimes call love, sometimes don’t even recognize it for what it is.
Just like the dishes from the kitchen of the Indian restaurant where some of the satire unfurls, the brilliant banter between Bachchan and Tabu is light on top, cooked just right and served at ummmmmmmmmm temperature.
In the first -half cinematographer P.C Sreeram captures an unexplored side of London. As the relationship between the couple grows, you sense undercurrents of feisty defiant and mischievous feelings trickling out of the verbal banter that you until now thought existed only in the range of the unspoken.
But then Mr Bachchan and Tabu are that kind of actors. They imbue every encounter on the rain-slickened streets of London into an occasion to celebrate the life force.
Tabu is a natural-born scene-stealer. She more than meets her match in her co-star.Is there no end to the surprises Mr Bachchan springs on us periodically? To imagine Cheeni Kum without Bachchan is to imagine that pivotal Hyderabadi biryani that brings the couple together, without the saffron..or any other flavour for that matter.
This intimate, amusing warm and utterly beguiling intimate character-study of love and its sudden appearance in lives that have accepted its non-presence, derives considerable energy from the supporting cast.
Not Paresh Rawail who as Mr Bachchan’s outraged father-in-law –to-be is surprisingly bland, but Zohra Sehgal as Mr Bachchan’s spunky mother and more specially, little Swini Khara as Mr Bachchan’s nextdoor neighbour who in her terminal illness provides the narrative with the gift of life….grab the lapels of your heart and sweep you into a world of love’s most satirical fears and foibles.
There are moments in this quirky captivating and curvaceous cinema that touch the highest notes of drama without getting hysterical.
What makes Cheeni Kum so unique? Is it the amazingly laidback chemistry between the lead pair? Is it the combination of satire and romance, mixed stirred and served up in a tall frothy glass? It is Balki’s word-spin that takes the romance into areas of absolutely seductive brightness?
Is it the the way London (mellow, supple, sensuous) and Delhi (heated grimy and spiced up) have ben captured by Sreeram’s calmly articulate cinematography? Or is it Ilayaraja’s talcum-fresh melodies trickling emotions in austere motions?
What makes Cheeni Kum so special in spite of a far-from-flawless second-half?
Could it be just the magic between Amitabh Bachchan and Tabu who seem to look into each other’s eyes and souls with such warmth and affection you forget their age difference completely.
Nah! It’s more. Cheeni Kum is a film where the words so match the thoughts and feelings of the characters that you forget someone else wrote the dialogues for the unlikely lovers.
Madhuri Dixit plays dumb
May 29, 2007
Everyone who’s worked on the sets of Aaja Nachle can’t stop raving about Madhuri Dixit. The lady’s fun-loving spirit, her adorable kids and her passion for work (even after such a long break) — has left her costars enamoured. In fact, she was a far stretch from her old reticent ways; we think, motherhood has done wonders for her, indeed. She spent her time behind-thecamera playing games. Yeah, she and Divya Dutta hit it off like a house on fire, and they would team up to play a game called ‘dumb-charades’ (where the players enact something without saying a word) on the sets. Needless to say, the opposing team didn’t know how to save face; an actress like Madhuri leaves you speechless anyway, right?
