Saif Ali Khan looking for a new House
April 25, 2007
Saif Ali Khan is on a hunting spree these days. No, he isn’t hunting for a suitable bride or a new girlfriend, but for a new house. A source tells us that ever since he’s split with his Italian girlfriend Rosa, Saif is on the look-out for a new house.
“He had left Amrita’s house where he was staying before he moved into a rented apartment along with his girlfriend, but now after the couple’s split Saif is again looking for another house. He plans to move out of his present house soon,” says a friend of the star. Now one wonders if it will be a bachelor’s pad this time around? What say, Saif ?
Shilpa Shetty likes Kay Kay over Shiney
April 25, 2007
With stars first comes diplomacy, then follows candour. But there are some who don’t mind speaking what’s on their mind. Recently when we quizzed Shilpa Shetty on which of her co-stars Shiney Ahuja or Kay Kay Menon does she really prefer, pat came her reply. “Kay Kay is a very intense actor, who believes a lot in methodology and preparations. He likes to work on his various scenes. Whereas Shiney breezes through his scenes, he likes to be spontaneous and do impromptu scenes. It is very difficult to choose one over the other, as both of them are brilliant at their work, but if I am pushed to answer this, I’ll say Kay Kay does have a very strong screen presence and I would like to work with him again,” says Shilpa at her candid best.
Well, it’s not such a Shiney day for the other actor, we guess.
Three Khans bonding together
April 25, 2007
Looks like the three Khans, Shah Rukh, Salman and Saif are bonding big time. Ever since the Bachchans have been in the limelight because of the much hyped and talked about Abhiash wedding, the three Khans (none of them were invited for the wedding) have been bonding with each other.
“Of late the three Khans, SRK, Salman and Saif are often seen spending time and chilling out together. And it seems like the trio have formed a new Khan camp in Bollywood. That will certainly be a major force to reckon with,” says a source in the industry.
So after the Bachchans, it’s celebration time for the Khans on their newly formed alliance and friendship!
Bollywood Babes do the Cha Cha Cha
April 25, 2007
Fourteen dances from 14 countries. That’s what Mumbai’s dancing queens including Kajol, Aditi Govitrikar, Kitu Gidwani, Neeta Lulla and Smiley Suri have in store for you on April 29 — International Dance Day. The evening will be hosted by an eight-and-a-halfmonths pregnant Maria Goretti at the JW Marriott. So instead of seeing Kajol shake her hips to Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye,
you’ll see her do the chacha-cha, while new-mom Aditi Govitrikar, will up the tempo with her mambo number, Kitu Gidwani will do the tango and Smiley Suri the meringue.
Meanwhile, fashion designer Neeta Lulla will salsa along with her daughter Nishka. And if there’s Kajol, can Bollywood be far behind? There will be a Bollywood twist to the show, with a dash of contemporary Bollywood numbers thrown in. “But the dances will be pure Latin American ones,” says dance choreographer and show director Sandip Soparrkar.
Was doing the cha-cha-cha cha-challenging for Kajol? “I simply love Latin music and the dance moves associated with it. It’s unlike any other dance. Yes it was challenging, but it was a lot of fun,” says Kajol. And was it a tough task to put these dancers into their dancing shoes? “Not at all, they’re all such quick learners. Kajol’s class is always high voltage, she is always excited and eager to learn more. She keeps saying, ‘Five more minutes’ or ‘One more song’. Kitu is also extremely enthusiastic. She will even come at midnight to practice! Aditi’s concentration is amazing, she will observe even a finger movement. Neeta is a natural dancer, extremely graceful and classy in her presentation,” says Sandip.
Kya Love Story Hai
April 25, 2007
Starring Tusshar Kapoor, Ayesha Takia, Karan Hukku
Directed by Lovely Singh
Rating: *
Two of ‘hero’ Tusshar Kapoor’s sidekicks(nationality, identity and motivation unknown) look at each other and say, “Nowadays only Yash Uncle(Chopra) has successes.”
In fact this failed film pays Mr Chopra a homage when the bubbly heroine runs towards her rich lover-boy and moves ahead into the arms of the hero waiting behind the rich lover in Lamhe.
No truer words are spoken in this bogus love try-angle that goes from corn to corniest with no break to feel the ache caused by every tepid take.
Director Lovely Singh has made a film that’s as lovely as watching a mad man make the sprint from India Gate to Parliament House with nothing on except the back ground music.
There’s something immensely graceless in a film about a loser who befriends and courts the spunky girl next-doll with pursed lips and tight jaws signifying that strange and outdated concept known as Silent Love.
In comparison, the Other Man (played by a not-unlikeable newcomer Karan Hukku) comes across smelling like roses. He reminds you of all those lonely eligible bachelor-tycoon types from Vinod Khanna in Chandni to Himanshu Malik in Tum Bin…
The spunky lass Kajal (played by the spunky Takia) loves the loser with a permanent hangdog expression, as though he has just come out of a terrible illness and was in desperate need of sympathy.
Sympathy is what the makers of this anaemic love story need for attempting a tale that’s as stale pale and frail as a yatch with no sail.
Material for a telefilm is turned into a baggy feature bogged down by cardboard characters and sidekicks who chase everything in skirts and bikinis.
The South African beaches offer the ‘Lovely’ director a chance to focus his creaky vision on butts and bosoms.
Alas voluptuous female-forms cannot compensate for a lack of vigour and contours in a narrative that moves at a pace which rivals the gawky movements of a bleached (and quite certainly dead) whale.
The script (by Rahul Singh) is what a love-stuck adolescent would write for a school competition. It portrays the characters as a bunch of nerds best left in the pages of a pavement pulp novel for girls between the ages of 9 and 12.
Last week we saw a superbly knitted script in Life Mein Kabhi Kabhee. This week we see a film in search of a script.
Wow, talk about a study on con tasks!
The editing(by Steven Bernard) alternates courtship scenes between Kapoor and Takia with comic relief. But what relief do we pbtain from the tedium of watching a feature film that mistakes cinema for the home medium?
The performances leave you cold and shivery waiting for one moment to connect with the characters. That moment never comes.
A word of advice. Watch Kareena Kapoor’s sizzling item song at home and stay away from this dead-at-the-centre love triangle about a boy who deserves no love, a girl who deserves more love, her suitor who deserves no-more love and an audience that deserves the cinema that it gets.
Smriti Irani AKA Tulsi to leave Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
April 25, 2007
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’s Baa may be 125 years old, but she’s going nowhere. The younger Baa, however, may be opting out. We are talking about Smriti Iraani aka Tulsi who could be quitting Kyunki… owing to her busy schedule. That’s the strong buzz in the industry. Both Smriti and producer Ekta Kapoor are tight-lipped about this, but the audiences, particularly housewives who have been tracking the serial for over six years now, have opinions to offer.
“It’s the main character and getting a replacement at this stage is detrimental,” says Sulakshana Jha (45), a housewife from Ghatkopar, echoing majority viewers’ sentiment. “Both Smriti and Ekta should bury their differences and continue doing the show. It’s in their interest. This is Ekta’s most popular show. And this serial is responsible for Smriti’s popularity,” says Sulakshana, who’s not missed a single episode of this saas-bahu show, except when there’s been no power in her house!
Another option, as Nishigandha Ghatge (32), a housewife from Malad voices, is to eliminate Tulsi’s character altogether. “It’s better not to get a replacement. Instead they should send Tulsi on a long teerthyatra in the show and elevate other characters. Soon she might be forgotten.”
However, Tulsi being the main protagonist and the most popular character in Kyunki, even after two time leaps, this may not be an easy thing to do.
So, who should replace Smriti if at all? Shefali Shah seems quite a popular choice. “It’s been many years since she has been on TV. Besides in the serial Hasratein at that time she’d played a senior character quite convincingly,” says Meghana Shah (34), a housewife from Borivali. Actress Renuka Shahane too would have been a strong contender had she not made a return to the small screen.
Top film actresses from yesteryears like Sharmila Tagore, Shabana Azmi or Neetu Singh may not be a bad choice, feel some. “It should be an actress who’s never come on TV. There should be some surprise element,” says Minu Patel (27), a housewife from Andheri, who fights with her husband every night these days to watch the show instead of cricket!
Meanwhile, there’s talk that actresses Gautami Gadgil and Padmini Kolhapure have been approached by the production house for the role. Will one of them sign on the dotted line? Or eventually will Smriti continue as Tulsi? Or, as Sujatha Rao (31), a housewife from Chembur, says, “Maybe the serial should continue without the character Tulsi and if it doesn’t work, it should wrap up. It’s been six years anyway.”
POINTS FOR EKTA TO CONSIDER:
a. Get Smriti to continue b. Eliminate Tulsi’s character c. Replace Smriti with Shefali Shah or a top film actress of the past d. Take the serial to a logical conclusion
Ramu will never work with Jiah Khan again
April 24, 2007
The rumours about filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma and his various muses refuse to die away. The latest doing the rounds is that all is not well between Ramu and his Nishabd actress Jiah Khan. Apparently, the trouble began after Jiah said that she was not portrayed well in the film. While Jiah dismissed the news, Ramu seems to have taken the issue to heart. Sources also suggest that Ramu’s other heroine, Nisha Kothari, is not so pleased with the proximity between Ramu and Jiah. And now things have come to such a pass that Ramu has decided not to work with Jiah in any other project.
Ramu has said: “I am done with Jiah in Nishabd. I have no intentions of working with her again.” In the meanwhile, there was buzz that Ramu was also buying a flat for Jiah. But Ramu has clearly said that they are not in touch anymore. Jiah, meanwhile, maintains she never criticised Ramu and doesn’t know what went wrong. “This is some kind of media joke on which I don’t want to comment.”
New Bollywood Babe Zoa Morani
April 24, 2007
Looks like 2007 is going to be the year of promising newcomers. Already Rishi-Neetu’s son Ranbir Kapoor and Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam are being treated like superstars. And next in line is the lovely daughter of starmaker Kareem Morani. Zoa Morani is a talented and bright young girl completely focused on her film career.
But unlike the glam dolls of the 80s and 90s, this young lady wants to learn the basics of movie-making before taking the plunge. She was very clear that she would never visit any sets of her well-connected film family before this, focusing entirely on her studies. But once that was out of the way, she was even considered by Aamir Khan for his home-production Jaane Tu Ya a year ago, but then Zoa herself felt she was too young to be exposed. On the contrary, she chose to assist Farah Khan on the sets of family friend Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om just so that she could learn by watching Deepika Padukone, how a newcomer starts off. Now Zoa is ready to rock ‘n’ roll. And with a family as strong in the movie business as the Moranis, makers are already lining up. Need we say more?
Bipasha Basu gets a bahu for her son
April 24, 2007
Did you know that Bipasha Basu has a son? And did you know that she has now found a bahu for herself ? Shocking as it may sound, but it is true. The son she lovingly refers to (and doesn’t hide from the world) is her pet Chihuahua Poshto. The little ’un is about two years old and has yet to mate. Which is making him quite a ‘hot dog’ indeed.
So guess what? He’s going around doing what hot dogs normally do. Attach themselves to the nearest arm, leg or foot and ‘go for it’. This is exactly what a Times Now reporter discovered recently when she was in the midst of an interview with super sexy Bips. The camera was rolling, the question was asked, and Bipasha was answering; when suddenly the young reporter found Posto attached to her bare arm and ‘going for the kill’. Being such a small dog, she couldn’t push him either for fear of hurting him. But she would gently push him away each time.
Except that the amorous animal would come over and reattach himself all over again — each time the grip being tighter than the last (she even has claw marks on her arms to prove it). This led Bipasha to grin throughout the interview, post which she and her mom had a hearty laugh at the journo’s expense. Even as Posto strutted around like a ‘conquistador’ dog. Later Bipasha told us, “Normally Posto prefers going for men. I almost thought he’s gay. This is the first time he has gone for a girl. Thank god he’s normal.” Then she turned to the reporter and said, “This makes you my bahu. Welcome to the Basu household.” And everyone around collapsed laughing. Except Posto’s new conquest, of course.
Shilpa Shetty’s first flick after Big Brother
April 24, 2007
Actress Shilpa Shetty has become a popular figure in the UK, what with her having won the reality game show Big Brother. And Richard Gere’s kiss to the actress has also garnered much publicity.
The person who is all set to cash in on Shilpa’s current status is producer Ronnie Screwvala, the producer of Shilpa’s next flick Metro. He tells us, “This will be Shilpa’s first release after her Big Brother win and we perceive her accelerating popularity as a positive sign for Metro’s prospects in the overseas market. We have had major enquires from exhibitors and sponsors alike from the UK, US and the Gulf and are hopeful to take the film to all the people who want to watch Shilpa.” So Ronnie, we hear, is going to make this movie larger than life, in India as well as at the international ‘metros’.
